The List: Weeks 10 & 11 (Thanksgiving!)

I’m totally excited for Thanksgiving – so much good food! Plus, the boyfriend will be making the trip from Michigan to join me, so I’m not eating a huge spread (or shopping at 3 am) by myself :)

Here’s the menu:

Seem like a ton of food for two people? It is. But it’s Thanksgiving! The one day a year where the point is to gorge yourself. God bless America.

Know what the best part about all this is? I’m doing it in budget. That’s right. I went back and tallied up my under-budget dollars from the last few weeks and, while I haven’t gone shopping yet, I think I’ll be able to make it. Now, with Nate down here, I’ll be going out a couple times and cooking for two a couple times over the weekend. I haven’t totally planned it out, I’m just trusting it’ll even out.

For you watchdogs out there, here’s my math:

I’m shopping for Thanksgiving week and the week after together, since most of the following week will be re-purposed leftovers. That starts me with $80. I have $35 leftover from under-budget weeks ($3 from week 6, $19 from week 7, $4 from week 8, & $9 from week 9), bringing me to $115. I never counted my apples from my last trip to the orchard ($15 – yes, I went a little overboard), so that brings me down to $100. Lastly, I’ve ordered a turkey that’s 8-10 lbs at $2.49/lb, so I’m guessing that’ll end up being about $25, leaving me with $75 to pick up the rest of my Thanksgiving groceries, plus breakfast, snacks, and food for the week after. Thankfully, I have enough food leftover from this week that, combined with the soup I have left in the freezer, will feed me until turkey day.

In addition to the menu above, here are the other foods I have planned for the next two weeks:

I’ll include the list of ALL the ingredients in the soon-to-be-attached google doc, but for brevity (er, to make this less REALLY long), I’ll just share my shopping list here (everything I need minus what I have already).

Shopping list:

Produce

  • 1 lb cremini mushrooms
  • ½ lb button mushrooms
  • 3 medium onions
  • Celery
  • Parsley
  • 1 bag cranberries
  • 1 Tbsp fresh ginger
  • 1 lb green beans
  • 2 lbs potatoes
  • 2 sweet potatoes
  • 1 bag of carrots
  • 1 pomegranate

Cold stuff

  • eggs
  • 1 small carton whipping cream
  • 1 big carton Greek yogurt
  • 1 box of pie crusts
  • 1 bag frozen corn

Everything else

  • Aluminum roasting pan
  • 1 Italian loaf
  • 1 box low sodium chicken broth
  • 1 small can French’s fried onions
  • 2 cans of pumpkin
  • 1 can evaporated milk
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 can black beans
  • 1 small can green chiles
  • 1 bag egg noodles

I should be able to get all that for $75 right? If I have extra maybe I’ll even grab a little cheese & salami for snacking while cooking. Wish me luck!

  1. I bought a turkey to cook at the cottage after Thanksgiving. It’s not Thanksgiving Weekend without leftovers. Grilled turkey sounds interesting. Is it tricky?
